Harry Potter is falling pretty hard ($240 million so far). If there is anything that get the momentum back in the hopes of reaching $400 million it will be the holidays. 2 straight 5 day weekend could really give the box office a boost.IP: Logged |

I really enjoyed this movie, but it doesn't seem that type that is really worth repeat viewing. That's not a knock, really. I just think the whole thing is based on a "what's going to happen next" momentum and once you KNOW what's going to happen next there's not much left. I wouldn't have added more humor or music or anything along those lines, but I think that's what keeps people wanting to watch similar fairy tale type movies like the Disney animated features. (Gives them their "rewatchability" as TVLand would say.) I am, however, looking forward to catching the next installment.IP: Logged |

According to ads in the trades today, Harry Potter has hit $560 million in worldwide box office to date. Not bad for one month's work. It appears to be doing much better overseas than here at home.IP: Logged |

If you want to see a horrible example of a bad newspaper ad, check out the Harry Potter ad in today's L.A. or New York Times. I can assume it's in all the papers. It's really horrible and will bring no one new into the theater. Provided you even know what the movie is that's being advertised. It's an embarrassment. This is an especially important weekend for Harry and that ad and the whole "Having a Harry Christmas" TV campaign is not making it easier for HP to compete.IP: Logged |

Not only did Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone cross the $300-million mark at the domestic box office last weekend, it also crossed the $500-million mark in total international sales, according to Screen Daily, the online edition of the British trade publication Screen International. The film's worldwide sales now stands at $811 million, making it the third biggest international hit of all time, after Titanic and Jurassic Park. IP: Logged |

Video stores in North America have individually stocked thousands of DVDs of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (...Philosopher's Stone in Canada) in anticipation of record demand today (Tuesday), the first day of the movie's video release. Meanwhile, the London Times reported today that Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón (Y To Mamá También) is likely to take over the helm from Chris Columbus, who directed the original Potter film and the forthcoming sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, due to be released in November. Cuarón, who received high marks for his work with teenaged actors in Mamá, would be charged with guiding Harry through his first romantic encounter with the opposite sex. IP: Logged |

Harry Potter fans are freezing up the Internet as they try to download sneak images from the new film. The second installment of the wizard tale, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will not bow until later this year, but exclusive photos have been posted on America Online, causing a surge in downloads. The movie stills show Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, in the Chamber of Secrets, along with new characters including Lucius Malfoy (British actor Jason Isaacs), the father of Potter's nemesis Draco, and Gilderoy Lockhart, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, played by Kenneth Branagh. The first film scored a huge hit at the box office and studio bosses are fueling more Potter fever when they release the full length movie trailer this Friday with Scooby-Doo. IP: Logged |

Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mama También, Great Expectations, A Little Princess) has been selected to direct the third Harry Potter movie, The Prisoner of Azkaban, scheduled for release in 2004, taking over the helm from Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Potter movies. Columbus will remain as a producer of the third film. (In producer Art Linson's tell-all book about the movie business, What Just Happened?, he devotes a chapter to Cuarón's "lavish direction" of Great Expectations, which he says caused endless delays, 19 script revisions, and huge budget overruns.)
