Today's Wall Street Journal was reporting that hundreds of Harry Potter fansites worldwide are being shut down. Warner Bros.' lawyers are sending the site operators (mostly kids) letters demanding they close shop and turn over their domain names to the studio.

While I can sympathize when it's a case of cybersquatting, from what I gather, most of these are just kids that are fans of the books that set them up long before Warner Bros. had any movie in the works. This seems like really bad publicity surrounding something that's supposed to be family friendly. It just seems to taint the project a little in my view.

Hey, PeopleHater, what do you care about little kids who want to see Harry Potter or set up a website for Harry Potter? Don't you understand? Warner Brothers needs to get all the traffic to their own site so they can pick up all that advertising revenue. What's the going rate now? $0.50 CPM?

Fan sites should be left alone unless of course they are making a Harry Potter site to promote Harry Pothead Meets Little Anal Annie. (or insert your better porn title here...)

I just heard a quote from J.K. Rowling, she said "screw the kids, give me the cash!!!"

Don't worry. WB will find many more ways to taint this project before they're done. I heard there is going to be AOL product placement in the first movie (also in the Willy Wonka remake I hear). So there will be many more chances over the next year for people to hate what Warner Bros. is doing to Harry Potter.

AMERICA Online in a Harry Potter movie?! Isn't that as absurd as it sounds? Does Harry surf the net in the books?

"HARRY POTTER DRUGS SHOCK /// Filming of the Harry Potter movie has been rocked by a drugs probe after syringes were found at the studios..."

Oh, my God... No! Not drugs found on a film set! This has never happened before!

Harry Potter got a front page placement on today's (Sunday 1/21/01) L. A. Times Calendar section. It's the 2001 sneak issue with all the upcoming movies. I guess Harry Potter would be the most anticipated movie of the year and the biggest potential for mega-hit status.

Just saw this on the Studio Briefing -

Warner Bros. lawyers have threatened legal action against Christie Chan, a 15-year-old Singaporean, who has registered the Internet domain name www.harrypotternetwork.net. Warners said in a letter to the girl that her use of the Harry Potter name was "likely to cause consumer confusion or dilution of intellectual property rights." The studio touched off an uproar among Potter fans last month when it sent a similar letter to a 15-year-old British girl, Claire Field, demanding that she hand over the URL www.harrypotterguide.co.uk. After U.K. attorneys rallied to her defense, Warner Bros. backed off and allowed her to keep the website provided that she state that it was an "unofficial Harry Potter site." The latest salvo against the Singaporean girl has refueled the fan controversy, with Kieren McCarthy, a columnist for the British Web publication The Register railing, "It really is depressing how global companies continue to justify outrageous, immoral behavior through profit or control." Meanwhile, the Internet site www.potterwar.org.uk has been set up "to protest at what's being done to Harry Potter fans in the name of J K Rowling, and as an expression of support for everyone currently getting the third degree from Warners."

I heard they're selling the walls cheap right now at Warner Bros. Studio Stores if anybody cared enough to buy them.
