Here's a story on the "star" of the show. From Laguna Beach (another guilty pleasure).'Clean start' for 'Laguna Beach' star Lauren Conrad moves to 'The Hills' LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- There were no cameras following Lauren Conrad as she entered the West Hollywood cafe. That's notable. Since she was a high-school senior, much of the life of the now 20-year old aqua-eyed, blonde Californian has been filmed, videoed, tape-recorded and put on air. "It just seemed like a cool opportunity," Conrad says, recalling why she signed on for such exposure. It's not something she or her friends consider particularly odd. "I mean if you go to any high school, you are going to get a lot of people who want to be on TV." Conrad became a central character in "Laguna Beach," the MTV series that chronicles teenage life in her hometown, an upscale Southern California beach community. Now she's left school and home and has moved up the coast to Los Angeles, where she's the focal point of the spin-off series "The Hills" (Wednesdays, 10 p.m. EDT). The cameras capture Conrad's lifestyle as she hangs out with new friends, including a volatile roommate, 19-year-old Heidi Montag, and tries to balance the demands of study at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and an internship at Teen Vogue with the youthful need to party and talk about relationships. The series is shot in a glossy style that might be "The O.C." goes "Melrose Place," except, of course, it's for real. Conrad and the show's creator and executive producer, Adam DiVello, don't believe there's artifice in the process. "Everything they are going through is real. She's really moved up here, she's really moved into that apartment, and Heidi is her best friend, and Audrina lives in the building, and Whitney is her fellow intern," says DiVello, when asked if there is any point where reality ends and scripting takes over. "We film with them for extremely long periods of time, so we do capture everything as it happens, but we have to mold that into a story, of course." 'Stuff is going to happen' There's some need to pre-plan, particularly to secure access to the locations where Conrad works and plays, dines and dances. But once entree is granted the cameras are positioned discretely. DiVello says there's no need to fictionalize because, "Whenever you get a group of kids in their early 20s together, living on their own for the first time in a city, stuff is going to happen." DiVello first worked with Conrad on "Laguna Beach." He calls her "a trouper" and says "she's definitely become extremely relaxed and comfortable in front of the cameras." Conrad says that "the clean start" of doing a new show allows her to reveal what she'd learned from the previous venture. "I think, like, a lot of times you put up a shell when you are filming. You don't want people to know a lot of things, but what I've learned is that people always relate to your problems ... So you shouldn't be afraid ... If anything it makes for better television if you open up, so I definitely think I let down my guard in filming this show." The series does well with viewers aged 12 to 24, who also log on to "The After Show" to dish with the stars and avidly discusses the content in online chat rooms. Conrad doesn't check out the online chatter. "I used to .... but they are really brutal. So, no. They don't have too much nice to say ... but it's like anything else, people love you or they hate you." She doesn't watch much TV, but thinks that reality series have caught on because "television shows are so predictable." With a show like hers, "You don't know what is going to happen. Life isn't predictable, and what they have done with this show is make it look as good as a drama." She says she is "pretty critical" of herself on camera -- questioning her hair and fashion styles and wondering why in one recent episode she appeared "really grumpy." She not grumpy this day. Polite and low-key, she's prettily dressed in a black empire-lined, camisole-strapped summer frock, which her boyfriend, Jason, helped her pick out. She's wearing ballet flats. There's a tiny anchor on a thin gold chain around her neck. Another chain holds a glittery star, a gift given to each of "The Hills" girls. It's the only flashy thing about her appearance. Unlike her friend Montag, a dedicated party girl who wants a film career, Conrad has no plans to become an actress. She insists, "I can't act." But she hopes to achieve her goal to work in the fashion business, possibly in concept development or as a stylist. She says the close ties between entertainment and the fashion industry made "The Hills" too good an opportunity to miss out on. That's one reason she signed on. Another is, "It's lots of fun." Bon Voyage for The Hills by Sarah Hall As the third season of MTV's The Hills wound down Monday, Lauren was decamping for a dream trip to Paris, while Heidi was homeward bound to Colorado to get some much needed space from Spencer. As for what happens next, fans won't have to wait very long to find out. On MTV's live Aftershow following the season finale, Lauren revealed that the series will return this spring with eight bonus episodes tracking her and Whitney's trip to Paris on behalf of Teen Vogue, as well the ongoing relationship drama between Heidi and Spencer. "This season of The Hills is not over. We'll be picking up soon, and you'll get to see our whole trip to Paris and everything that follows afterwards," Lauren said. Extending the run of its number one show was an undoubtedly savvy move for MTV, which saw more than 72 million viewers tune in over the course of the third season. Now, the network is playing to those viewers' addictions by giving them more of what they crave. "MTV is giving the passionate fans of The Hills what they deserve—an extended season to catch up on cast relationships and finally see Lauren realize a long-awaited dream," MTV programming exec Tony DiSanto said in a statement about the bonus episodes. The new episodes of the series are slated to premiere in March. In the meantime, fans will be left to grapple with pressing questions such as, "Will Heidi and Spencer actually get married?" and "What's really going on between Lauren and Brody?" During Monday's episode, Heidi told a coworker she felt like she was "in a relationship with a five-year-old" and needed "breathing room." Toward the end of the show, she was shown tearfully packing her bags for Colorado to put some much needed distance between herself and Spencer. At the Hills after-party at L.A. hot spot Area Monday night, Heidi arrived alone, tellingly without her engagement ring. Though she told E! Online TV Diva Kristin Dos Santos that she and Spencer are "trying to work it out," she was vague as to whether her wedding is still on. (For more exclusive scoop from the after-party, check out Watch with Kristin.) Meanwhile, Spencer told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday that the wedding was "definitely on pause," but that he was "madly in love" with Heidi, whom he considers "the most perfect girl on the planet." All indications of a breakup aside, the duo were spotted together as recently as Friday at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, and were also seen Christmas-tree shopping late last month. Aside from the on-camera tensions between Heidi and Spencer, there was still evident off-camera friction between Heidi and Lauren, as the former was whisked away from the Area event by MTV publicists before the latter arrived in order to avoid a confrontation. Both girls have denied rumors of reconciliation, insisting they remain sworn enemies, as do Spencer and Brody, who also fell out in the aftermath of the feud. At Area, Lauren also denied that she and her boy-who's-a-friend, Brody, are a couple, though she hasn't ruled out the possibility of a romance at some point in the future. All in all, there's plenty of Hills drama to look forward to in the new year—even if, as Lauren recently admitted to Entertainment Weekly, it's not always all real. "We're not filming The Truman Show, we don't have cameras set up all around our apartment, and they're not with us 24/7," she said, explaining why "reenactments" of certain situations are sometimes necessary. "I mean, it's not lying to anyone, it's telling what really happened, but it's just the way they film reality shows." Faux or no, it's a formula that seems to be working. IP: Logged |

Speidi was spotted at El Compadre on Sunset Boulevard Saturday night with MTV cameras in tow (do they ever stop filming?), having one of their manufactured fights (do they ever stop arguing?).Only, producers must have decided they didn't catch the drama from the best angle, because Spencer and Heidi were actually forced to redo their confrontation a couple of times in front of restaurant patrons. "It was pretty ridiculous and so staged," says one witness. Sadly, we're not even shocked or outraged anymore. How about you?

'The Hills' Star Conrad Blasts Magazine The Hills star Lauren Conrad has slammed an American magazine for using a fake interview and embarrassing her on the front cover. The reality TV star has accused Us Weekly of pulling together a number of interviews and placing her picture on the front cover with the headline, "Stabbed in the Back" - referring to her friend and co-star Audrina Patridge. But Conrad is adamant she has not spoken to anyone at the publication. She writes on her blog, "The article itself is a nice one but it follows headlines that, in no way, represent my words or feelings. I do not feel betrayed by Audrina or (Conrad's ex) Brody Jenner. I love them both and said nothing to contradict this." And a friends tells New York gossip column Page Six Conrad was not happy with the article because she is friends with people at the magazine: "She's very good friends with these people. She goes out to dinner with them, and so does Audrina. So Lauren definitely wasn't happy when she saw this cover."

Lame final episode. Heard on the radio this morning Lauren and her boyfriend, Doug Reinhardt, broke up. He claims her head was too big and he didn't like the way the show portrayed him. Had to chuckle at that since he was never shown on the show. IP: Logged |

Pratt Apologises For Ugly Olsen Remark1 July 2008 5:48 PM, PDT Latest: U.S. reality TV star Spencer Pratt has apologised to Mary-kate Olsen for calling her the "less cute (Olsen) twin," after she joked about his bad temper during a late-night TV appearance. Olsen upset The Hills star when she recalled high school memories of Pratt during a recent appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, revealing he was a star soccer player who often flew into a rage on the pitch. Pratt immediately proved her right by attacking Olsen in the media. But now he admits he let his emotions get the better of him: "I apologise for getting caught up in trash talking, but she brought up an emotional subject when she mentioned the soccer stuff." Pratt tells Us Weekly magazine he has nothing but the utmost respect for his old school pal: "I'm secretly jealous of her. I want my face on a lunchbox, too." IP: Logged |

Is ‘The Hills’ headed for the hills? Say it isn’t so. Infighting and diva behavior on the set of MTV reality show “The Hills” is said to have reached such an extreme that the show could be on the chopping block.“No one gets along anymore. Whitney (Port) moved to New York, Audrina (Patridge) can’t stand to be in the same room as Lauren (Conrad) anymore and they all want more money,” a show insider told OK! magazine. Conrad, who feels she’s been branded a “bad friend and a slut,” according to the source, isn’t even sure she wants to return for another season. “She isn’t sure what to do. As of right now, she hasn’t signed off for the next season,” the source told OK!. IP: Logged |

Montag's Heidiwood Line DroppedThe Hills star Heidi Montag has had her clothing line with U.S. brand Anchor Blue scrapped - just seven months after its launch. The reality TV star turned designer for her budget Heidiwood line, which debuted in April. But bosses at Anchor Blue have chosen not to renew the contract, so they can focus on their own fashion range. Marla White, Director of Marketing at Anchor Blue Retail Group, says, "Anchor Blue and Heidi Montag are pleased with what Heidiwood for Anchor Blue accomplished during this past year. However Anchor Blue chose not to extend the Heidiwood contract after the initial year as they will be concentrating solely on what their heritage, their foundation, is based on - denim."
