POLL: Which New Show Will You Watch?

Fall is for sweaters, colorful leaves and new TV! From singing students to political wives caught in a scandal, Hollywood is bringing out a handful of new shows this year. Which one will you watch? Courteney Cox Arquette returns to TV with her sexy new comedy Cougar Town (ABC), which debuts Sept. 23, about a middle-aged woman trying to rediscover herself and her sexuality in the wake of a divorce. Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Katie Cassidy will join some familiar faces on the CW’s reincarnation of Melrose Place, debuting Sept. 8. The Good Wife stars Julianna Margulies as a woman whose husband (played by Chris Noth) is at the center of a political sex scandal. Technically, Glee (FOX), a musical comedy about a high school glee club, isn’t new — the pilot aired in May after the finale of American Idol — but its first season continues Sept. 9. And on Sept. 24, the creators of Lost debut Flashforward (ABC), a mysterious show about what happens when the entire human population blacks out and sees a glimpse of the future.

HitFix Interview: Jessalyn Gilsig of 'Glee'

25 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fox's "Glee" is a series about spreading your wings and soaring, but inspirational teacher Will (Matthew Morrison) has a heavy tether in his own living room in the form of his wife Terri, a spouse willing to do anything to keep her family together, even if it means making her husband miserable. On a show fans love (after only one oft-repeated episode), Jessalyn Gilsig plays the woman fans love to hate, a formidable adversary standing between Will and seeming happiness with Jayma Mays' Emma. With credits including "Boston Public," "Nip/Tuck" (with "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy), "Heroes" (like her romantic rival Mays)

I'll be watching. It will be interesting to see how the numbers hold from the premiere last spring. They certainly have been promoting the fuck out of it.

FOX's "Glee" kicked off its season as Wednesday's top show among adults 18-49, but its numbers -- about 7.3 million people tuned in -- were a little underwhelming given all the hype FOX has put into the series.

NBC led Wednesday's ratings with 8.1 million viewers and a 5.2 rating/8 share in households. FOX (6.9 million, 4.2/7) came in second overall, a little ahead of CBS (6 million, 4.1/7). ABC took fourth with 5.4 million viewers and a 3.4/6, and The CW brought in 3.2 million people and a 2.2/4. Numbers for ABC, CBS and NBC will all change some as they carried President Obama's address to Congress live at 8 p.m. ET.

FOX scored the top spot in the 18-49 demographic with a 3.0 rating. No one else broke the 2.0 mark, with NBC in second at 1.9. ABC, 1.6, came in third, followed by The CW, 1.5, and CBS, 1.3.

The hour-by-hour results:

8 p.m.

NBC: Presidential address (8.2 million viewers, 5.2/9 households)
ABC: Presidential address (7.4 million, 4.5/7)
FOX: "So You Think You Can Dance" season premiere (6.5 million, 3.9/6)
CBS: Presidential address (5.6 million, 3.8/6)
The CW: "America's Next Top Model" season premiere (3.1 million, 2.1/3)

18-49 leader: "So You Think You Can Dance" (2.7)

9 p.m.

NBC: "America's Got Talent" (9.7 million, 6.0/9)
FOX: "Glee" series premiere (7.3 million, 4.6/7)
CBS: "Criminal Minds" rerun (6.2 million, 4.2/7)
ABC: "Wipeout" (5 million, 3.0/5)
The CW: "America's Next Top Model" season premiere (3.4 million, 2.3/4)

18-49 leader: "Glee" (3.3)

10 p.m.

NBC: "Law & Order: SVU" rerun (6.5 million, 4.3/7)
CBS: "CSI: Miami" rerun (6.2 million, 4.3/7)
ABC: "Primetime: Crime" (3.8 million, 2.6/5)

18-49 leader: "Law & Order: SVU" (1.6)

Ratings information includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are preliminary and subject to change, especially in the case of live telecasts.

Glee-ful Moment of the Night: Josh Groban!

Humorous and hummable song-and-dance numbers in each episode of Fox’s Glee? A given. But what we love about the show are the little touches that make each viewing a special occasion. Last week, pausing to see all of the crazy health pamphlets in guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury’s office was as fun as spotting all the New Zealand tourism poster slogans in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords. This week’s Glee-ful moment was the fantastic cameo by singer Josh Groban, specifically this line, delivered in such un-Groban-like third person to Will Schuester’s tipsy mom: "Throngs of screaming teenage girls don’t do it for Josh Groban, no. Josh Groban loves a blowsy alcoholic."

Breaking: 'Glee' renewed for full season

1 hour ago | EW - Ausiello Files | See recent EW.com - The Ausiello Files news »

This just in: Fox is on the verge of announcing a full-season pickup for Glee, sources confirm. The show, which has performed solidly in the ratings, initially received a 13-episode order from the network. The back-nine pickup brings the total number of first-season episodes to — I suck at math but I think I've got this — 22.

'Glee' banks on risky strategy

* Story Highlights
* Fox aired an episode of "Glee" months before its premiere
* First show followed popular "American Idol" finale
* "Glee" had an intense summer marketing campaign
* Critic: "You either love this show, or you really don't care"

By Lisa Respers France
CNN

(CNN) -- When Fox aired a sneak-peek episode of its new series "Glee" four months before the show actually premiered, it took a big chance that the audience would still care.

To help maintain the buzz, it delved into social networking, maintained a strong online presence, dispatched the show's actors to malls across the country and held a fan contest.

In an era when episodic television is battling for ratings against reality television and broadcast TV faces the loss of audience to cable networks, those familiar with the industry said, such innovation may have to become the norm.

"Particularly for those networks that skew younger such as Fox, CW and ABC to an extent, they are going to have to really promote all of their shows all year long and find new ways to keep them in front of their viewers and remind them that they are there," said Ed Martin, a television critic who writes for JackMyers.com. "What Fox did last spring was something totally new that had never been done before."

In a week when most prime time shows are debuting with the hopes of attracting an audience, "Glee" seems to have already found its niche. On Monday, Fox announced that it had ordered a full season of the show.

"Glee" follows the exploits of a group of underdogs who are members of a high school show choir.

The hour-long musical comedy, co-created by "Nip/Tuck" producer Ryan Murphy, created high anticipation after its first airing in May, following an episode of the wildly popular "American Idol."

The pilot was re-aired with a special director's cut prior to the premier of the actual season with Fox counting the pilot as episode one. Episode four debuts on Wednesday.

Bill Gorman, editor and co-founder of the site TV By the Numbers, said he would put the level of interest in "Glee" on his site "as pretty strong for a new show."

Gorman said the show -- whose premiere numbers may or may not have been helped by the fact it was one of the few airing during President Obama's health care address -- is initially faring well among the coveted 18- to 49-year-old viewer demographic.

According to the Nielsen Ratings, the "Glee" premiere garnered 7.44 million viewers, placing it in 19th place in the top 20. VideoWatch a clip of the show's second episode »

"The 'Glee' premiere this fall did better than what Fox is calling the preview after 'American Idol,' " Gorman said.

To maintain interest over the summer, the show embarked on an ambitious marketing scheme. Joe Earley, executive vice president of marketing and communications for Fox, said the show was screened at summer camps, stars engaged in a 10-city tour, street teams handed out "Glee"-related items, and trailers were shown in front of the latest "Harry Potter" film.

Online, characters had Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, the pilot was available for streaming, and the show's stars took handheld cameras to events to gather behind-the-scenes content. The director's cut of the pilot was followed by a "Tweet-peat" where the stars and the fans took to Twitter to discuss the episode.

Martin said he was present when Fox screened an episode at the geekiest of all events: Comic-Con in San Diego, California.

"It was a standing-room-only crowd of several thousands of people," Martin said. "The cheering and yelling and screaming was ear-splitting. The crowd almost blew the roof off the place with their enthusiasm for the episode."

Visibility seemed to be key for the quirky show that some have referred to as " 'High School Musical' on steroids."

Earley said one challenge came in that the many facets that have given "Glee" its distinction -- it's a black comedy, it's a musical, it's a drama, it's about high school, it's about adults -- also made it difficult to market.

Still, airing the pilot four months before its regular run could have easily backfired, he said.

"If people didn't like it, it would have been four months of negative buzz," he said. "We could have been killing a show before it even began."

The result has been an strong fan base with a deep engagement who are taking to social networking to spread the message and buying the songs on iTunes, Earley said.

"What we have is this core of really passionate, very savvy fans, and they are definitely ambassadors for the show," said Earley, who added that executives have been pleased with the ratings.

Chicago Tribune TV critic Maureen Ryan said executives seem to have totally committed to a show that from the onset was a risk.

"You either love this show, or you really don't care," she said. "There's not really a huge amount of in-between."

Ryan said that, in her opinion, the show is far from perfect (she points to the unlovable character of teacher Will Schuester's wife as a weakness) but says it has an opportunity to do well commercially.

"The terrific thing about 'Glee' is not only that it has this interesting concept going for it, but it has a ton on money-making potential," she said. "They've been selling the DVD of the pilot at Walmart, and they sent out a press release saying five of the top 200 songs on iTunes are songs from the show, and they are releasing a soundtrack soon."

Critic Martin said, given its mix of music and satire, the "Glee" strategy may not work for every show -- say a medical drama -- but if the network strikes gold with the new series, he imagines that it may serve as a blueprint for others.

"It would not surprise me at all if Fox had another promising new show in their development plan for next fall and decided to give it the same treatment as 'Glee,' " Martin said.

'Glee' tour in planning stages for 2010

Attention Gleeks: you may be able to catch all your favorite Glee songs performed live next year. EW has learned that a Glee music tour is in the early discussion stage. It's not surprising given that the series' music has been exploding on iTunes and the first Glee soundtrack drops on Nov. 3. Back in July, Fox Broadcasting president Kevin Reilly hinted at the development to EW. "We've had a tremendous amount of enthusiasm from our music partners," said Reilly. "Certainly if these kids become stars in their own right, who knows? Live appearances. Albums. There's lots of things that could happen.

If I hadn’t been warming to Glee already, this for sure would’ve begun defrosting me: Dollhouse-keeper Joss Whedon has agreed to direct one of the back nine episodes that Fox just ordered.

Turns out, the genius who gave us not only the “Once More, With Feeling” musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but also Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is a big fan of Ryan Murphy’s new phenom. So when Twentieth (the studio behind Glee) approached him about the gig, pretty much his only reservation was scheduling.

“Joss directed one of the great musical episodes in the history of television on Buffy,” gushes Murphy, “so this is a great, if unexpected, fit. I’m thrilled he’ll be loaning us his fantastic groundbreaking talent.”

And there’s no reason to panic, Dollhouse fans: I’m told the auteur’s moonlighting in no way, shape or form suggests that that show is a goner. He’d most likely tackle the side job after Eliza Dushku and Co. have wrapped their 13-episode order.

So whad’ya think? Good news or great? And any bets on how soon the petition will be started to get Sarah Michelle Gellar a bit part?

The recording industry has been given a much-needed shot in the arm by TV shows that spotlight new CDs and by the Fox musical-comedy series Glee in particular, Reuters reported on Monday. Sony's Columbia Records and Fox TV have been releasing cover versions online of songs performed on Glee with often spectacular success. (The cast recording of the 1981 Journey song "Don't Stop Believin'" has sold more than 500,000 copies online, mostly on Apple's iTunes.) Columbia also retains first rights to recording contracts with the show's stars and gets a cut from concerts, endorsements, merchandising and ringtones, Reuters reported. It said that the CW network also gets a reduced rate on the use of music on its programs in exchange for on-air ads for the music which urge viewers to go to CWTV.com to purchase it.

'Glee': Jump for joy and smile 'cause Terri is finally busted!

By Liz Pardue

December 2, 2009 8:35 PM

We can all take a collective deep breath and relax, because the fake pregnancy storyline on "Glee" has come to its belated, inevitable conclusion. And yet, somehow, I still feel unsatisfied. Possibly because there were only two songs. And possibly because this should've happened two months ago. But hey, I'll take it!

Busted: When Will finds Terri's pregnancy bump while looking for something in the dresser (and I'm amazed he even knew what it was), he gets mad. Scary mad. Matthew Morrison is beyond fantastic in this scene. When a hysterical Terri blames Glee Club for making Will feel like he's better than their marriage, he argues that he was only trying to make it a marriage of equals. Accusations are shouted, but the final nail is hammered into the coffin when Terri confesses that she was going to pass Quinn's baby off as their own. Will simply tells her he loved her. Past tense. And he leaves. All together now: FINALLY!

Say cheese: Glee Club doesn't make it into the yearbook thanks to Sue reminding Figgins that their photo is inevitably vandalized, but Will buys a quarter-page ad to at least feature two of the kids. Realizing that a photo would only put a target on their backs, the kids uniformly refuse to participate save Rachel, who convinces Finn to join her. She prepares him for the photo with a flirty version of "Smile," which is pretty much wholly inappropriate for the context outside of the title. Finn bails, but Rachel gets the photographer to cast the club in a local mattress commercial, creating much-needed Glee pride.

The commercial consists of Glee Club performing "Jump" in their pajamas as they dance on and around mattresses. That just seems like it's begging for a lawsuit when some kid sees it, jumps on the bed, and breaks his arm. But I suppose lots of suspension of disbelief is in order here (rights to the song, mikes for the singing...).

When Sue sees the commercial, she points out that the show choir rules disqualify any group that accepts compensation for performance, and the Club was compensated with mattresses they can't give back because Will had to crash on one after leaving Terri. Um, what are high school kids going to do with a bunch of mattresses anyway? Worst payment ever! Will chooses to disqualify himself from sectionals, allowing the kids to compete separately from him. I'm hoping for another wildly inappropriate "Push It"-style performance. Maybe "I Want Your Sex," or "Afternoon Delight" (that one's for all you "Arrested Development" fans out there).

The kids proudly pose for the yearbook page that a newly Glee-loyal Quinn blackmailed Sue into giving them. And it's defaced by the football team as soon as it's printed. Ah, well. And incidentally, maybe if they didn't give each teacher, guidance counselor and coach a full page, they'd have space for all the clubs. Just a thought.

jaymamays_glee_290.jpgWimma? Emill?: Ken, it seems, has coincidentally scheduled the wedding for the same day as Sectionals, leaving Emma unable to attend. Can't say I blame him, given the situation, but that's still pretty mean. When Will suggests to Emma that Ken might've done so on purpose because of Will and Emma's "relationship," Emma reminds him of Ken's several good qualities, and that he isn't vindictive. She also reminds Will that, most importantly, she's marrying the man. Will acknowledges being over the line, which I suppose he was.

When Emma and Will discuss his relationship troubles, she says she understands Terri's intent, even though her methods should probably be illegal. As she puts it, "You're a lot to lose, Will." Hmm, yeah, step one in keeping your husband is probably just not being a horrible human being. Faking a baby is at least step six.

Odds and Ends:

* After next week, we'll be "Glee"-less until April. Soak it in while you can, folks.
* The show has used voiceovers much more often in the past few weeks. I honestly don't like it very much, at least not at this quantity. Show, don't tell, guys! A little bit can be really funny, but at this point they're providing a lot of exposition, too.
* That last song totally doesn't count, since it was only sung in the background. But I'm assuming Sectionals will blow this week out of the water, so I'm willing to be patient.
* Has anyone told Quinn about Terri being busted? Because a heads up so she can make alternate arrangements for the human being coming out of her body in a few months would probably be the polite thing to do.

Quotes:

* Quinn: "I want my kids to be able to look back at these books and see who I was. Make them proud. Not the bastard one I'm carrying now, of course, but the ones I'll have when I'm married and ready."
* Football player: "How do you spell 'loser'? I'm going to write it on his forehead!"
* Store owner: "We here at Mattress Land believe that mattresses aren't just for sleeping and fornicating anymore." (Really? So...reading and watching TV? 'Cause that's pretty much all I've got. Unless you count drinking glasses of wine that don't spill no matter how hard you jump on the bed.)
* Sue: "All I want is one day of the year where I'm not visually assaulted by uglies and fatties."
* Sue on Quinn's Cheerios uniform: "It's like looking at a porn star in a nun's habit."

Songs:

* "Smile" by Lily Allen, performed by Rachel and Finn
* "Jump" by Van Halen, performed by Glee Club
* "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin, performed by Glee Club (in the background)

This Just In: Glee Officially Gets Wicked!

Glee: Guess who's paying a little ol' visit to the set of our favorite musical sensation today? Idina Menzel! Lea Michele (Rachel) took no time at all to tweet that Wicked's other leading lady (Kristin Chenoweth has already appeared) is on the set of Glee today. "So happy she's on our show," gushed Lea. The cast is shooting the Madonna episode this week, so does that mean Idina might bust out a Material Girl hit? Not so fast, the show's Fox rep tells me they are actually shooting two episodes this week, and Idina is in the non-Madonna one.

All of the guest stars are getting a little annoying. It's becoming the new Love Boat especially if Liza Minelli shows up.
