The definitive Shostakovich site is http://www.siue.edu/~aho/musov/dmitri.html

That site has everything you'd ever want to know about DS.

While I'm in a topic on Film Scores... May I just say that the GREATEST film score ever written was Ennio Morricone's score for Cinema Paradiso.

Anybody see The Cider House Rules. That score was good - I can't believe it didn't win the Oscar. They fuckin' just gave to the classical guy that wrote Red Violin. Just because it's classical doesn't mean it's classic.

If we're talking about great film scores, ALEXANDER NEVSKY is absolutely the best. How can any Hollywood hack comopare with Prokofiev?

Thank God, a serious post. Yes, Alexander Nevsky is awesome... Have you, zhivago (not the fight club guy) heard Shostakovich's Hamlet score. It's great.

Remember that really old guy, whose name is some weird symbol, did he win an Oscar? Doesn't that make him greater than this Dimitri guy? Or am I missing something?

Mozart didn't win an Oscar either, moron. It's not the only gauge for great music. Sure, Prince won an Oscar and so did Peter Allen... that doesn't necessary make them more talented composers than Beethoven or Brahams...

I'm sure Gladiator will have this huge, rousing score... but if they actually used music from the times, it would be a couple of guys whistling and maybe somebody banging on a piece of wood.

I just heard a promo for Jason & the Argonauts on NBC and it was featurin music from some boy band like 98 degrees or something. WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS?

Somebody in the movies area posted that the score of Gladiator was rip off of Henry V. I couldn't agree more. Hans Zimmer is a thief!

Ah, who cares if Hans Zimmer steals from Patrick Doyle - they're all Hollywood hacks who steal simple melodies from other composers very complex works.
