This week is the 250 anniversary of J.S. Bach's death so I thought I would put up a topic for people to discuss his music. His influence on music is stronger than any other known composer. Many people feel that modern music (including rock and jazz) started with Bach. That's debatable but he was a powerful figure nonetheless.

Well done, Emily. An excellent topic. On the 200 anniversary of his death in 1950, Dmitri Shostakovich undertook the writing of his 24 Preludes & Fugues for piano as a tribute to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.

Bach's Double Concerto and F Minor Concerto are featured prominently in Woody Allen's film "Hannah and Her Sisters."

Do yourselves a favor at get Bach's Goldberg Variations with Glenn Gould at the piano. He did one recording in the 50s when he was just starting and one in the early 80s months before his death. When I first heard both versions about 15 years ago, I didn't realize that he hums along with the piano. I thought there was a ghost or a burglar in the room, but then I realized, what ghost or burglar would know the Goldberg Variations?

Yeah, but who's going to know who he is in 200 years time?

"Bach is music." I think that's what Mozart said about him. Now we pretty much only hear his music at expensive brunches which play the music because they think it means high class. Bach should be given more respect than that. It's not parlour music, he gets down into the mud with us.

I think people say they like Bach and most other classical composers because they want people to think they're smart. I feel most people are bored by this music but are afraid to admit because they're worried snobbish people will think they're stupid.

Ramses, you are incorrect. People these days, even intellectuals, do not feign to like Bach to seem smart. Classical music or literature knowledge is no longer a barometer for intelligence or fine education. It's technology and business knowledge which gets the most respect these days. People who love Bach, for the most part, genuinely love Bach. And if you're into classical (as I am), how can you not love Bach?

Chimpanzebra, don't post here if you want to make a joke. Go post in movies or television - but not in Bach.

My thoughts about Mozart goes for Bach as well.
