Beyonce & Lady Gaga Land Nine VMA Nominations Each

4 August 2009 10:41 AM, PDT

Beyonce and Lady Gaga will fight it out for the title of pop queen of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards after landing nine nominations apiece.

The pop stars will go head-to-head for Video of the Year - Beyonce's Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) and GaGa's Poker Face will compete against Eminem's We Made You, Kanye West's Love Lockdown and 2008 winner Britney Spears, who is nominated for her hit single Womanizer.

Beyonce and GaGa's singles will also fight it out for the Best Female Video and Best Pop Video accolades.

Spears will hope to continue her triple winning streak at last year's event after scoring a total of seven nominations - among the prizes she is shortlisted for is Best Pop Video.

Meanwhile, rap rivals Eminem and West will fight it out in four categories, including Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, while the Stronger hitmaker's latest promo Paranoid has earned him a nomination for Best Special Effects.

The nominees were announced on Tuesday in a video message by British comedian Russell Brand, who will return as show host for the second consecutive year.

The 2009 VMAs will take place in New York on 13 September, and will feature performances by Green Day, Taylor Swift, Pink and Muse.

Janet Jackson to open MTV's Video Music Awards as part of tribute to Michael

just now | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Janet Jackson will help pay tribute to her brother Michael at Sunday's Video Music Awards on MTV. She will open the show, which we're sure will be filled with references to Michael Jackson's legacy. If you haven't seen it, the VMAs are running a clever commercial tagging the salute to the King of Pop that opens with a sequined glove falling from the sky onto a New York taxi cab windshield. The single glove is followed by a storm of sequined gloves. Finally, a voice over says something like "The King of Pop reigns" Sunday night at the VMAs.

Russell Brand Preparing His Jokes About 'Twilight'

1 hour ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

As MTV reporter Jim Cantiello says in the video below, "sharpen your fangs, Twilighters." As you all should know -- as you all had better know! -- this Sunday is the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" star and all around funny dude Russell Brand is the host. Another big component to Sunday night's broadcast, as I'm sure you know, is that MTV will be premiering new trailers for the Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" and the "Twilight" follow-up, "New Moon."

Yeah, we've been talking about it all week. But Brand + "New Moon" = jokes. At least, that's the plan. In the below video from Brand's Vma rehearsal, you can see how the comedian plans to rib on Stephenie Meyer's vampire series come Sunday night.

Marc Webb In The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Director Spotlight

Next up in our 2009 Vma director spotlight is Marc Webb, who is also up for a Moonman in the Best Direction category. Webb has been in the game since the late '90s, though he only recently made the jump into feature film directing. His "(500) Days of Summer," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, scored a lot of buzz at Sundance earlier this year and has continued to score well with critics since its August 7 release.

For Sunday night's 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, Webb hopes to pick up a statue for his work directing the video for Green Day's "21 Guns." Check out that video below and hit the jump to compare it with some footage for "(500) Days."

Poll: Do you forgive Kanye West's interruption? (And should President Obama?)

Behold a 15-second sample for the spoken word portion of Kanye West's newest track, in which he interrupts President Obama to inform him, too, that Beyonce had one of the best videos of All Time. I call it "With Liberty and Health Care For All (12″ Douche Remix)" Who smells sales? If you missed Kanye's bizarre spotlight-hogging display after Taylor Swift's win for Best Female Video at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, read all about it over at The Music Mix, and vote in EW.com's poll, below: More MTV VMAs: Kanye West apologizes for interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMAs: 'I'm not crazy...I'm just real.' Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift’s VMAs moment: What was he thinking? Lil Mama: Why was she on stage during Jay-z and Alicia Keys' Vma performance? The 2009 Vma Awards: We live-blogged it!

It seemed pretty staged to me. What was Taylor Swift doing standing in the wings when Beyonce won? Very strange indeed.
