Very spirited early posts which brings up a very important topic. Is theatre really dead in this country? Are we, indeed, doomed to watch The Odd Couple at dinner playhouses for our tenth wedding anniversaries or will something come along (like Gulag:A New Musical opening in New York this July) to bring theatre out of its overpriced doldrums. What do you think?

"The Odd Couple?" What about freakin' "The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds," "Not Now Darling," or "A Tuna Christmas?" "The Odd Couple" is the least of our worries. I'd be more scared if "A Thousand Clowns" was opening than "The Odd Couple." You mean the female version, right? With all the gratuitous sex like the version I saw at NYU, right?

I agree that it's not fair to take pot shots at The Odd Couple. In fact, Manka Bros. produced a very successful revival of The Odd Couple setting it in Elizabethan times... In fact, we called it Shakespeare's The Odd Couple (as a joke) but obviously 85% capacity at The Booth Theatre in New York for 6 straight weeks validated our decision.

Perhaps someday we'll set Brighton Beach Memoirs during the Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba. Why not? I saw Antony & Cleopatra set during New Orleans Prohibition...

People are talking about that show at the Mark Taper Forum, the Metamophosis. Anybody see it?

David Merrick is dead. The torch of old-time Broadway musicals has been passed and what is Broadway's hottest musical this season? The Music Man.

Theatre is certainly not dead in London where the top shows are The Lion King, Chicago and The Graduate... I think that when England's top shows is nothing but our rehashed shit, there might be problem.

There's this review in Variety today about Uncle Vanya at the Roundabout Theatre in New York. This sort of flip review is the reason people think the classics are boring:

"There's really no excuse for being bored," snips Sonya, rather dangerously, about two hours into the Roundabout Theater Co's new production of "Uncle Vanya". A single though may almost be heard skittering through the heads of the audience: Wanna bet, girlfriend?"

You know, I like Manka Bros. I always have. But, I must say, I really hate these idiots on the boards that don't let people have a decent discussion.

Even sadder stilll, JonKoncak, is that these Theatre boards are the most happening on the Internet.
