Audiences didn't really enjoy it. It never made it to Broadway. Critics gave it great reviews but the investors just weren't willing to put money into something that controversial and dark. I think the songs are brilliant and point out the hypocrosies in American society.IP: Logged |

I read a interview that Steve Allen gave recently - in which a very pompous Allen said that he thought that he was the greatest living composer and that he was the second greatest living lyricist with only Stephen Sondheim being a better lyric writer. He's definitely wrong on the music thing - but right in the fact that Sondheim is the best lyricist ever - no way is Steve Allen number 2. I would even put Jerry Herman or Tim Rice before Steve Allen.IP: Logged |

People Hater is no Jerry Herman people. People Hater likes people (as much as any people hater can) like Rodgers and Hammerstein, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.IP: Logged |

I was very disappointed with the cast recording of "Saturday Night" - a rehashing and reworking of Sondheim's first musical. The vocals are weak (and a bit gay sounding - Broadway needs a good dose of John Raitt and Len Cariou if it wants to come back). They might as well have just recorded Marry Me A Little. I guess any recording of Sondheim is better than no new recording of Sondheim.IP: Logged |

I had to log on and post real quick - but I just read in Entertainment Weekly that a DVD (and VHS, whatever those are anymore) of the making of the Company original cast recording is being released. This is a must for all Sondheim fans. Go to Amazon or to the sondheim.com website for more info and ordering information. IP: Logged |

Britain's love affair with Sondheim continues as "Merrily We Roll Along" won the Olivier Award for Best Musical on the West End. It beat the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and "The Witches of Eastwick" - which is produced by Cameron Macintosh.IP: Logged |

The Witches of Eastwick? What'll they think of next?! (I suppose whatever film was released after Witches of Eastwick.) These are truly the dark ages of entertainment.IP: Logged |
