Mel Brooks just removed a brief parody from a song from Gypsy because Arthur Laurents and some others involved with the original (Gypsy) protested. According to the New York Post, "One source told the Post that the parody 'infuriated' Laurents, who felt that it 'would hurt the [original] song and Gypsy in the future.'"

Oooooohhhhhh noooooooo, don't want to get Arthur Laurents mad!!!! There's nothing scarier than a bunch of angry theater folk.

Does anybody know what specifically angered them so much?

What Arthur Laurent's problem? Does he want to contribute to the death of Broadway? New York needs "The Producers" to be a big hit. No one should interfere with what they want to do creatively.

Nathan Lane will be playing the Zero Mostel part and Matthew Broderick will be the Gene Wilder part. They could have done worse. If there was a guarantee big hit, this is it (other than Gulag!: A New Musical, of course).

Nathan Lane just doesn't seem old enough to play the mentor role, but I'll withhold judgement. I like Broderick and realize he's got a history in theater (saw him years ago in Brighton Beach Memoirs, etc.) but this casting still comes off as giving in to public's need for more "Hollywood". Can the majority of Broadway shows survive now without casting a name that's already been established in film and television?

The show got a huge rave from Variety today saying that even though it's still in its pre-Broadway run (Chicago), with a few tweaks this will be a classic that runs for years and years. Lane and Broderick were both praised for their performances. And Mel Brooks wrote both the music and lyrics. I had heard mentioned somewhere that Marvin Hamlisch was doing the music, but it's just Mel.

I'll be seeing it this summer. I hope the cast holds out that long (July). I really want to see Broderick and Lane.

It would be best to get tickets now. I've heard the entire Lane/Broderick run is practically sold out. You don't want to wait for Tom Wopat and Norm from Cheers.

Mel Brooks was on 60 Minutes last night talking about this show. He was also talking about how he is an offensive comedian and doesn't shy away from controversy. What am I missing? He's about the tamest comic around. He's old Catskills and I like it. Just don't call yourself edgy. I saw Spaceballs.

The Producers just got 11 Outer Critics award nominations. The show is still in previews. Best musical, plus nominations for lead actors plus a bunch of technical nominations.

From Variety:

"Whether 'The Producers' shoudl be clasified as a Broadway musical or a party exploding eight times a week at the St. James Theater can be debated. However you choose to describe it, the show is a rip-roaring, gut-busting, rib-tickling, knee-slapping, aisle-rolling (insert yoru own compound adjective here) good time. This big whoopee cushion of a musical simultaneously restores its primary author, Mel Brooks - the granddaddy of grossout humor, after all - to his rightful place of honor in showbiz, and gives Broadway the kind of headline-making megahit it hasn't seen since a certain Disney feline came to town.

14 Drama Desk nominations. It would appear to be "The Producers" year on Broadway.
