Wow, Vermont. Who'd of thought? Meanwhile our incredibly "liberal and free" state of CA has not only been the first in the union to ban smoking in bars (let's get real) but to actively fight down the rights of certain persons to enjoy the same civil rights other persons have, based on their sex.

Great days for Vermont. Sad comment on living here in California.

Anybody out there that can explain to me how two people caring for each other and wanting to commit to a relationship with each other, might in any way threaten someone else's marriage?

As opposed to the great state of New Hampshire here which is run by church ladies and convenience store clerks who look at you like you're an alcoholic if you buy a six pack of beer. Cheers to Vermont indeed (though in my personal experience they are much more conservative than it appears today).

It may appear on paper and in the newspapers about how great Vermont is, but the people of Vermont (and Kilgore there are plenty of church ladies in Vermont) are not really for this bill, but they feel it needed to passed to uphold their hippie standing with Ben & Jerry's and all.

California pass gay marriage bill? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Do people realize that other than San Francisco and parts of Los Angeles, this is a goddamned Republican state. We aren't the liberal mafia like so many Republicans claim. Sure, Hollywood has influence and uses it to further the democratic agenda. But this state will never vote for gay rights or anything that is slightly different than the status quo.

Yes, a congratulations goes out to Vermont. It was a controversial move and one that took a lot of guts. Somebody had to start - it was a movement that was not going away even though conversatives would have love that.

Yes, I wasn't really making a point about how great Vermont is, just the point of same sex marriage rights.

CA will not follow suit, but we aren't the only ones. And political parties don't really matter all that much. Fact is, there are a lot of people in this world who live in their fear (though understanding those fears is beyond me) and simply want everyone to be alike, live alike, etc. It's rather sad.

While I also don't care for the strange superiority complex most humans seem to have (about being "human"), I think Steinbeck put these thoughts beautifully:

"And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what I am about. I can understand why a system built on a pattern must try to destory the free mind, for this is one thing which can by inspection destroy such a system. Surely I can understand this, and I hate it and I will fight against it to preserve the one thing that separates us from the uncreative beasts. If the glory can be killed, we are lost." --from East of Eden

Hopefully, someday we'll get to a point when every marriage that isn't "normal" isn't noted on television which only stirs up more controversy. I guess it's groundbreaking but do we really need all this media coverage? I think it hurts more than helps the cause.

It basically talks about how the whole thing came about. The two women who sued the state of Vermont and won. It also mentioned stuff I didn't know - for instance, I didn't know Alaska and Hawaii has repealed their same sex marriage laws. A voter referendum overturned the Supreme Court decisions. The Christian right is also trying to get a similar referendum on the November ballet in Vermont to overturn this latest state congressional vote. Don't let it happen, Vermonters. It may also be up on the motherjones.com website. It's a great publication and needs to be supported.

It's not up on the website. But it mentions that articles will go up eventually from the current issue. We have to do whatever we can to make sure the law stands!

It's going to be a harder fight than many people imagine. A lot of people think the law was passed so that is that. But look at Hawaii, look at Alaska... This will be put to a vote of the people - hopefully it won't get onto this November's ballot and there will a year or so of people realizing that this is a good thing for the state of Vermont. If it's this November there may be trouble because it's still fresh in people's minds and they haven't formed strong opinions either way.
