Let's talk about cocktails. There's a place here in LA called the Formosa Cafe - they serve a little thing called a Red Bull Martini. Red bull and vodka baby! That's what I'm talking about! What's your drink? Let's talk about cocktails.

When I'm drinking to get drunk it's Long Island Ice Teas - when I'm just out drinking for fun - it's vodka and cranberry juice (I think that's called a Cape Cod).

anybody who would contaminate decent alcohol with juicy juice needs to reexamine life, love, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

What better time to discuss cocktails than... cocktail hour!

Just now, I am enjoying a Bombay Sapphire martini. Quite ymmuy and definately hitting the spot as I relax and let dinner cook. Nothing to do but sip my drink and check on things now and then. What a perfect time of day!

Normally I'm a scotch/rocks kind of woman, but evey now and then I get on a martini kick.

A few comments about cocktails... First, and I believe most important, is that it would seem cocktails are not being honored as they should be. Last survey I saw had the national average person consuming 2-3 drinks per week. This tells me that people are not honoring the lovely tradition of cocktail hour. This is a tradition I grew up with (military/political background) and quite frankly, it IS one of the bright spots in the day. Everyone relaxes, has a cocktail and converses -- yes, I did say converses. In my time we also conversed at the dinner table, even if we were children. So anyway, I think all of us need to do everything we can to bring this tradition back to it's former state of glory.

Second, while I personally do not care for getting drunk (a slight buzz is okay, but beyond that I just pass out), I realize that many people do not appreciate cocktails for their virtue, but rather simply as a means get drunk. In fact, many of them do not care for the flavor of alcohol in any form. These people generally do "ruin" good booze with all sorts of nasty stuff.

And while I feel that if you are going to put sugar water into your beverage, you may as well use the cheap stuff, because you certainly can't tell the difference (especially with vodka), many have assured me that, yes indeed, they can tell difference. While I am doubtful, my feeling is that as long as people are enjoying a good cocktail, it is not for me to say that they cannot dilute their booze.

I do always want to inform people, though, that mixing your alcohol with sugary substances is what generally causes people to end up with their head in a toilet. Quite undignified. But then again, so is falling off your chair.

Cheers!

Oh damn! There's nothing worse than dinner being ready and you haveb't had your second cocktail! Now, by the time I have another, my dinner may be overdone and dried out...

Of course, if you catch it early enough (as I think I may have) you can compensate -- gotta go adjust the oven...

I keep a pretty well stocked bar here (maybe an understatement - I think my parents are worried I'm some sort of alcoholic). It's actually got more to do with quality than quantity, there are a LOT of different bottles but most, other than staples, aren't replaced too frequently. I like the idea that I can mix just about anything I, or any of my guests, might like at a moments notice. (If I'm ever lacking anything, it's usually a fruit juice like Cranberry juice, etc., that might be called for in a recipe and not the alcohol.) Sad thing is, nobody ever takes me up on the offer. I've got, perhaps, two friends that drink mixed drinks while the rest are content with the beers, ales, etc., that I keep on hand. I'm not wishing that more of my friends drank more. Just kind of disappointing to enjoy the process of mixing and drinking the occasional cocktail myself and nobody sharing the fun. Every now and then I can convince my wife to try something I've just mixed up, but she doesn't like most alcohol to begin with. (She does like the occasional grasshopper, but beyond that it's usually just an occasional shot of liquer of some sort in her coffee.)

My enjoyment of the process has very little to do with getting drunk. In many ways it's like smoking my pipe vs. something like cigarettes - slowing down to take the time to actually mix something (vs. just removing a bottle cap) is a huge part of the fun. Must be comparable to people who enjoy cooking for themselves vs. eating out of take out food. I love the acoutrements, the shapes of the bottles, the smells, the colors of the various liquors as much, if not more, than the tastes of the drinks themselves.

I don't want to rant about it too much, for risk of sounding like a huge alcoholic. Just glad to see somebody else who is keeping the flame lit. Am going to pour myself a nightcap in G2's honor.
