Well, well, well... The hammer came down on Napster.com today. Any feelings out there? The Judge ruled the site should be shut down pending trial because he didn't think Napster had much of a case. Personally, I go back and forth on this. Everybody used to share CDs and let friends borrow them to copy songs, etc. But this isn't necessarily sharing. It's giving others an exact digital dupe of the songs. It's a tough call, but if bands really feel they're losing money, they have a right to get angry about it.

This is not about Napster the website, it's about the technology and a warning to others that might try to do this. Because you can't stop people from trading music online - they'll just go to some other site. The music industry wants to ban the entire swapping industry. Napster is small potatoes compared to what the music industry really wants.

My position is simple. It's stealing. Shut it down.

Do you honestly think a court decision is going to stop technofreaks from downloading and trading anything? Come on. Don't be so stupid. Movies, television, music - copyrights are screwed in this new world. Protection is moot.

This Napster "buyout" is the silliest thing I've ever heard of. The CEO is urging all 20 million of its registered users to go out and buy the music of their favorite artists which would prove that they encourage the purchasing of music. You know if this helps them get a favorable verdict they will immediately return to their practice of allowing the theft of music and non-payment to artists.

By allowing Napster to continue running their business, the Judge is actually giving them an opportunity to alter their business and remove any blatant disregard for copyrights. Napster has a window of time to adjust their business or face a trial loss and eventual business shut down.

This too will pass. Record companies reluctantly agreed to CD Recordable drives - soon it will be DVD recordables and digital video recorders can capture any film shown on television. Soon you'll be able to trade movies and television shows with people. Napster will work out some kind of compensation deal and that will be it.

Fuck the high road! Let me come into your house and steal something that means alot to you and see you take the high road. How abou the little pictures your kids draw in kindergarten? Let me just steal those, make copies and sell them and not give your kid one penny. Screw the high road, it is theft!

It's not the same, Lars. You've already been paid and people are sharing. You don't think down the line something would have changed? Right now they're just starting their business, so a deal with record companies was out of the question because when they started, what record company would have even returned their calls. Now that they have a huge audience, the record companies are concerned. A deal will be cut, man. But gee whiz, they're just sharing music that they like.

This is basically the same grip I had in the Mike Myers discussion in Movies...
Once again, it looks like it will be a settlement instead of a trial. When is one of these companies are individuals going to take a stand against the studios. Everybody caves! It's so goddamned boring to realize that people can just be bought by the conglomerates.

A new trend that is going on now is companies are making mp3's with popular song titles but then putting their own advertising message on the mp3. So that when people try to download the new Blink 182 song (or whatever), they're getting an ad for a porn site or clothes company instead. It's causing a lot of confusion in the community.
