First of all, I'm a big fan. I have read them religiously once a week for about three years - but I'm not sure I really like this whole move to New York City. Part of the charm is that they're from Madison, Wisconsin and far away from the action. But maybe it's true that the only way to really get things going is to be in either New York or L.A. I wish them luck but sort of wish they were staying put.

New York's good for comedy. If they can afford to pay the writers a living wage in New York, then I'm sure they'll get some good stuff.

I think these guys will be one of the true online entertainment success stories. No, they won't be the next Yahoo - but I think they realize that and keep it cheap and small. Their content is always first rate and it's relatively inexpensive to produce. As long as the news exists, they'll have a product to parody as well as the content to fill it. These guys just seem like a really smart group to me. I think their entry into businesses such as books, etc., is happening at a much more reasonable pace than we've seen with a lot of other companies. These guys will still be around when a lot of the other online entertainment sites are long since gone.

Moving to Manhattan isn't necessarily keeping it cheap. You wonder if they're doing it to keep The Onion going or to improve the individual's chances of getting other non-Onion work. I know Conan O'Brien has praised them in the past and I think has hired a couple of ex-writers of The Onion. I wish them luck.

I don't think it's cheap in the immediate sense. But if they're finally starting to branch out to books, etc., it's probably a financial necessity to be closer to the publishing industry, etc. and cheaper in the long run. I think these guys are smart (and funny) and will make this work.

These guys have gotten so many offers from big publishers, Time Inc., etc. to really step up the operation, this is just a natural extension of actually becoming BIG DEALS. They deserve it.

Miramax signed a first look deal with The Onion. Harvey Weinstein said: "We're proud to welcome the Onion to our city with this first look del." I guess the move is paying off already.

Except, of course, for all the folks who are fortunate enough to work at Manka Bros.

Long story in this month's Premiere about The Onion's film deal with Miramax. It seems like a pretty sweet deal. Any of the 7 The Onion writers can just go in and pitch whenever they want and there is a further clause for Miramax to buy a certain number of spec scripts written by Onion staffers.
