Vice Media Signs Deal for TV Channel in Canada

Vice Media took a significant step Thursday toward creating a traditional television channel, signing a deal with Canadian cable and wireless provider Rogers Communications Inc. to build a content studio that will lead to the launch of a TV network in Canada next year. Vice continues to negotiate in the U.S. with cable channel-owner A+E Networks, which bought 10% of the edgy, youth-oriented website for $250 million in late August. In those discussions, Vice is looking for an opportunity to get its own branded television network in the U.S. Rogers and Vice said they would form a C$100 million ($89.4 million) joint venture to build a studio in Toronto that would create Canadian-focused content for mobile, Web and television platforms in 2015. Vice started in 1994 as a punk-rock magazine in Montreal before expanding into music and online content that has had great success attracting younger —mostly male—viewers. It is noted for its edgy programming, which runs the gamut from war reporting to music reviews to documentaries about the global drug and sex trades. In recent years, Vice has increasingly made efforts to move into traditional TV, airing a news and documentary series on Time Warner Inc.’s HBO as well as having licensing deals for its content in several countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Vice’s partnership with A+E—which came simultaneously with a similar $250 million investment by venture capital firm Technology Crossover Ventures—valued the online network at $2.5 billion. Those deals were reached after talks between Vice and Time Warner over a broader broadcasting partnership fell apart earlier this year. In 2013, 21st Century Fox took a 5% stake in Vice.

Live Nation, Vice Media announce plans for music-themed platform

Live Nation Entertainment Inc. and Vice Media announced on Wednesday the launch of a new music-themed video service for mobile phones, Internet and TV. The platform, which will begin rolling out in 2015, will feature original artist-driven content, live digital music experiences, in-depth documentaries and daily editorial content. The deal with Live Nation taps into Vice's roots from its days as an underground, music-focused magazine. This is the latest deal for Vice, which has received a pair of recent major investments, including $250 million from Silicon Valley's Technology Crossover Ventures in September to help it expand. That followed a $250-million infusion from A+E Networks, which is owned by Hearst and the Walt Disney Co. A+E owns cable networks A&E and History Channel, which carry, respectively, shows such as "Duck Dynasty" and "Pawn Stars." The deals valued the company, which began as an edgy Montreal culture magazine in 1994, at about $2.5 billion. Last year, Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox paid $70 million for a 5% stake in Vice. Over the years, the Brooklyn-based company has expanded into television and movie production, advertising, digital media and book publishing. It also has a record label. Vice currently makes a weekly half-hour show for Time Warner Inc.'s paid TV network HBO that covers news, culture and politics around the world.
