What does everyone think about the purchase of Seagram (which includes Universal Studio) by French media powerhouses Vivendi and Canal +? Personally, I think it's great for the industry to have a major media company owned by the French. It will be interesting how they handle making the American films they need in France and still dealing with the Americanization of French culture. Will Vivendi and Canal+ suddenly become contributors to the end of that society as we know it? Or will they raise the bar and suddenly by Gerard Depardiu in summer blockbusters?

God I hope it goes through! I'm so sick of European companies complaining about the domination of American studios. Now Vivendi will have to realize that American product is what the people want - not just what they're forced to watch. Sure, there are great filmmakers from all around the world - but the best still converge in Hollywood and will for at least the next 10 years.

One of the crazier quotes I heard today was Edgar Bronfman saying that after AOL Time Warner announced their merger, he knew he had to sell because he couldn't compete. You know the world is fucked up when a company with $15 billion in revenues says it's too small to compete.

Looks like the deal was approved by Vivendi shareholders. These foreign companies have it so easy. They say they want to buy something and they buy it. There's no regulatory approval process or anything like that. AOL Time Warner has such an uphill battle.

I think this is a good deal. Entertainment business is becoming much more global. I like that companies from other countries are starting to become powerful. It will lead to better more diversified movies and television shows down the line.

Believe me, I know about this merger. Manka Bros. is deep into our global strategy plan and Vivendi, over the past few years, has become a force in European entertainment. I think it's a good match. You'll notice Seagram is not in the new company name Vivendi Universal. They liquor will be sold off and the Bronfman's will become billionaire retirees who pass along their fortune but don't have a real business.

I think this makes it a great time to be in the movie business. You no longer have to live in Hollywood to be a writer or filmmaker. More European and Asian filmmakers will be tapped to make "global" films - films that appeal to a wide audience. We'll get a much more racially balanced product line which is only good for the industry. It's bad for white male writers, but great for the craft.

Is this deal good for Hollywood? NO. Is this deal good for Paris? YES. Does anyone actually believe that Universal will make any film that has French portrayed as jerks or villains (not that they should in the first place)? It's a new world, folks. Suddenly, America doesn't say what happened in his history. Now the world will shape the fiction and the bending of the truth that Hollywood used to do so well.

This is great deal to be filmmakers and writers in Europe. It opens the doors for other companies and banks to get involved in production of films. With so much money in Europe it is cheaper to hire local talent than go to Hollywood.

Despite what Vivendi says in the press, Vivendi will be completely controlling every move in Universal City. Ron Meyer may still be in control of the studio, but Vivendi and Lescure will be in complete control over the decisions Meyer makes. The same thing goes for AOL. It's AOL company now and they'll do whatever they want with Warner Bros.

The whole goddamned merger is falling apart. It's not going to make it. You heard it here first. I got some very solid information today at lunch at The Grill.
