While technically under the "Disney" banner. I had to start a special topic for Miramax because I am blown away by the opening day of Scary Movie ($16 million Friday opening). The big studios must be scratching their heads wondering how can they do these low cost high grossing movies. Blair Witch drove them crazy last summer. Scary Movie has got to be driving them crazy this weekend.

And it's not like these studios can go out and try to make something similar to Scary Movie. They've tried the teen thing, but except for American Pie, no one has been able to do it. I think Mirimax and to a lesser extent Artisan (who got really lucky with Blair Witch) are better at spotting and executing trends than the studios. Studios try to create trends and occassionally it works with The Matrix and The Mummy - but mostly they react instead of proact.

Scary Movie is already in profit after its first weekend. Should be a big money maker for Miramax and we can expect another franchise here like Naked Gun or Airplane.

Miramax needs these cheap hits because of all the art house crap they buy up and never release. Art films are an extremely low margin business and it is not wise to go into or pursue that as a viable business. The profits from Scary Movie will most likely go to cover all the "independent" shit they couldn't sell.

They do buy too much crap - even if it's high brow crap it does no one any good to have it sit on the shelf. But every awards season, every studio executive in town wishes they would have done higher quality films just because that's what everyone is talking about at the awards parties. The day after the Oscars, everyone wants to make their Howard's End. Two days after it's back to Gone In Sixty Seconds.

As these guys get further and further away from what they're best at (acquiring and distributing art house films), they will slowly lose their dominance. As they try to become a "major" studio, they will become less of what they once were. And they're nothing without Harvey.

With the exception of Scary Movie, Miramax has been surprisingly quiet this year.

Harvey Weinstein is making an infommercial for Al Gore. Hopefully they won't use any footage from The Krays or The Cook, The Thief, etc. etc... He seems like the wrong guy to put this together. Shouldn't it be Aaron Sorkin that helps Al with his message.

Chocolat is going to be Miramax's big Oscar attempt this year.

Does anybody else beside me think that Miramax has completely abandoned their independent roots? You never hear about their acquisitions anymore. All you hear about is a new film that Miramax is producing and developing. They were the only ones that used to bring foreign films into this country - not it's hard to find more than 5 or 10 in any given year that are distributed in America.

Maybe Miramax needs to start an art house label of their own.

I don't believer there will be any Miramax miracle this year. Their only hope is if Chocolat can get some Oscar nominations, but that's farfetched at this point.

Miramax is only going to be releasing about 17 movies this year. This is a big departure in strategy for them and they say they're going to mix in more of the art hourse fare that they've sort of abandoned over the last couple years. Looking at their slate, I don't see any potential home runs except maybe for "The Shipping News" but that one is mostly going to nab the older women demographic.

I just noticed that Harvey and Bob are listed as producers on "The Producers" on Broadway. I don't know if this is another extension of Miramax into the Live Theater business but with Talk books and several other things in the workds, they are getting closer to becoming a vertically integrated company within Disney.
