I just noticed that MGM wasn't represented on our list of studios. Here's a good story to give you a look at how things have been for the lion this past year.

They're moving to a brand new skyscraper in Century City. That's a nice statement. The "lot" in Santa Monica is a joke.

Here's a very cocky statement from MGM's Chris McGurk:

"We think in the year 2001, we're going to have the best of every world. We have the lowest overhead in this business by far, and we are going to have a release slate that takes a back seat to no one."

Rollerball and Basic Instinct 2 - who knew those were in the front seat.

Manka Bros. may not have the lowest overhead in town, but we do have the best release slate this year.

I love what they're doing over at MGM. Here was a completely dead studio. They had licensed out their library, lost most executives, had very little in cash, didn't even have a studio lot anymore...

They just bought into Rainbow Cable Networks (Bravo, AMC, etc.), they're going to have a huge office space, they got back control of their library... piece by piece, they're building back into a real studio again. Got to give them credit. I'm rooting for them. They're a pure-play movie/TV company and it's a very hostile environment right now for that type of company. Go MGM!

I'm rooting for MGM this weekend to hit it big with Hannibal. After all the crap that company has been through over the years, it would be great if they had a blockbuster and could come back from the dead once again.

Great news for the Lion this weekend! Hannibal will gross over $50 million in its first weekend. With their exposure of about $40 million plus P&A, they will most suredly be in the black in a big way on this film.

While I'm sure it'll be considered a success, my prediction is that this first weekend will be really misleading and this will drop after the second weekend sharply and finish with a respectable, but not record setting (beyond these first weekend kind of things), total.

MGM posted a profit in the 4th quarter and are really on a roll now with Hannibal. They're going to up their stake in Rainbow and things are really looking up. If they can just keep the hits coming until the next Bond.

The rebirth continues...
-------------------
MGM MOVIE VAULT STORE NEW ON AMAZON

Tom Selleck fans who have long bemoaned the unavailability of his 1972 classic Daughters of Satan can take heart -- that title is one of almost 100 MGM library films now available on VHS through Amazon.com. The MGM Movie Vault Store will be the exclusive source for the titles, which will retail for $7.99 each. Other titles on offer include the Robert De Niro-Shelley Winters vehicle (directed by Roger Corman), Bloody Mama; Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez's 1990 film Men at Work; and what a release calls a "classic women-in-prison film," Caged Fury.

Now they're getting their TV operations back in shape:
...
In a move to gain leverage in the arena of international television distribution, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer said Wednesday it would manage the sales and distribution of NBC's current and future programming outside North America. Under a deal inked with NBC's distribution unit, MGM will sell and distribute programming such as "Will & Grace" and "Providence." MGM will use its television distribution outlets in Los Angeles, London, Sydney, Australia, and Atlanta to distribute the NBC product overseas. NBC Enterprises & Syndication, the distribution unit, will continue to manage NBC News and NBC Sports and late night formats.

The MGM movie channel is going to launch in Asia and Europe - more and more baby steps are turning them back into a major.

Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon looks funny and I think it will be a hit for MGM.

More executives leaving. Gerry Rich and Larry Gleason have left MGM as worldwide presidents of marketin and distribution, respectively. The jobs will probably be consolidated into one.

If "Rollerball" fails, they're really going to start having a major cash flow problem. I like everything they've done to attempt to become a vertically integrated company, but the cash may run out before they realize that goal. A couple of recent film bombs really hurt.
