I didn't see a topic for the Viacom empire, so I thought I would start one. Just Paramount isn't enough to contain this huge company. Mel Karmazin said today that he is unafraid of the upcoming strike (see post in strike thread). This company is the biggest advocate of advertising and says that the market isn't softening enough to hurt them. I guess there is no other line they can take, they depend on it.

There was a good report today from some analyst that said online advertising is on its way back up. Yahoo stock responded well to that report.

This is INCREDIBLE! You've got to read this. This is a horrible misuse of power.

This is a great buy opportunity right now. If you've got the extra cash - buy Viacom. The ad market isn't as bad as it appears in the media - which oddly is partially controlled by Viacom.

This stock has been very strong lately. Maybe that ad slowdown isn't really happening...

Here's a definite model for things to come...
------------
U.S consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Co. <PG.N> is in talks with media giant Viacom Inc. <VIA.N> over a $300 million cross media sales deal, under which P&G could buy advertising time across Viacom's vast media properties, Advertising Age reported on Monday.

According to Ad Age, the deal would be one of the largest cross-divisional deals ever and would include Viacom companies such as television network CBS, cable network MTV and TNN.

Viacom declined to comment on the report, while P&G officials could not be reached for comment.

Cross media deals are expected to balloon in the coming months and years in the wake of megamergers among media companies, such as the AOL Time Warner Inc. <AOL.N> deal completed earlier this year to create the largest Internet media concern in the world.

This may be a stock to buy. I like that the executives seem to be having fun while the AOL Time Warner executives seem to be void of any enthusiasm...

Karmazin has put a big international expansion plan in motion at Viacom. Right now the extent of their business is basically MTV International and Nickelodeon.

"Viacom's UPN will finally get to claim that it has full-fledged affiliates in the top 50 markets. Starting in early 2003, Roberts Broadcasting's WHSL will be the St. Louis home for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Enterprise crew and Vince McMahon's grapplers."

Viacom Inc. President Mel Karmazin on Monday said his company, which owns the CBS television network, would be interested in buying NBC if regulatory conditions allowed, although sources say the General Electric Co-owned network is not for sale.

"If GE hired investment bankers and were interested in spinning off the network, we would be interested in receiving one of those books (prospectus)," he said at the National Cable & Telecommunications Association's Cable 2001 conference.

NBC declined to comment.

But a source familiar with the matter called such a spinoff unlikely.

"Frankly, there's no way in hell GE is going to spin off NBC," the source said. "If it's all about profits and revenue, there is no reason for GE to do that. NBC brings too much money to the table."

Federal rules prohibit a company from owning more than one of the Big Four networks, but Karmazin said that in light of competition from cable networks and the Internet those regulations were "a little silly," and expressed hope that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission would reconsider those rules.

Asked if Viacom would be interested in buying CNN from AOL Time Warner Inc., he said, "If it were available, certainly we'd be interested." CNN is believed to have had discussions with several different networks about possible alliances.

Viacom is looking to acquire Telemundo. That would give them a very nice foothold into the Latin market.

Went up to my neighborhood Blockbuster and right there at the checkout line was a stack of Sumner Redstone's new book. That's synergy I guess... but a little weird. I didn't see any other books.

Nobody does corporate synergy like Viacom. This is the media stock to own (if you have to own a media stock - personally I would go with Microsoft or energy stocks. Fuck the volatile ad supported stocks)...
