Peter Bart is a pompous asshole that has everything bad coming to him. It's about time somebody got him on the record to expose him for the racist he is.

Don't even talk to me about the trades. It has been a hate/hate relationship with Manka Bros. over the years. Would it kill them to mention us or our projects?

Amy Wallace's warts-and-all profile of Variety editor Peter Bart, published in Los Angeles Magazine last summer, has been nominated for a National Magazine Award in the profile-writing category. The awards are considered the Oscars of the magazine publishing business. The article had accused Bart of using racist, sexist and anti-gay language and engaging in unethical journalistic conduct.

New York Times Nabs Variety's Isherwood

In its latest raid on Los Angeles publications, the New York Times has hired theater critic Charles Isherwood away from Variety.Isherwood, chief theater critic for the trade publication since 1998 and a member of its staff since 1993, will replace Margo Jefferson. Ben Brantley is the New York Times's lead critic. Isherwood is the author of Ecstasy and Wonder Bread, a book that examined the gay porn film industry, focusing on the death of one of its stars, Joey Stafano. In recent weeks, the Times has lured away several top journalists from the Los Angeles Times and L.A. Weekly.

Uphoff Quits As Publisher of Hollywood Reporter

Tony Uphoff, who succeeded Robert Dowling as publisher of The Hollywood Reporter on January 1, is himself being replaced after less than ten months in the position, according to the Los Angeles Times. On October 17, the newspaper said, John Kilcullen, publisher of Billboard since 2003, will succeed Uphoff, who has been named president of a division of CMP Technology in Irvine, which publishes various trade magazines and organizes trade shows. Kilcullen will continue to hold his post at Billboard, which, like The Hollywood Reporter, are owned by the Dutch media conglomerate VNU. However, he told the Times, he plans to shift his office from New York to Los Angeles.

Editorial Bloodbath at Hollywood Reporter

In what some entertainment analysts are regarding as a bloodbath at the No. 2 trade publication, eight more executives, writers and other staff members of the Hollywood Reporter were fired Thursday, Daily Variety, the leading trade paper, reported today (Friday). Among those let go was the Reporter's executive editor, Peter Pryor, who will follow VP Matthew King and editorial director Howard Burns out the door. Pryor is a former Variety editor and son of the late Thomas M. Pryor, editor-in-chief of Variety from 1959-1989. Others being let go include business columnist Diane Mermigas ("Mermigas on Media"), music editor Chris Morris, and international general manager John Burman. Variety said that Cynthia Littleton has become the top-ranking editor at the Reporter.

Rating the VNU Bloodbath

What started as a trickle of high-profile editorial firings at The Hollywood Reporter last week will expand to a flood of 4,000 layoffs at Netherlands-based VNU, company CEO David Calhoun indicated Monday. The massive firings are intended to reduce costs by 10 percent (the 4,000 layoffs represent about 10 percent of VNU employees). Many of the personnel cuts will affect employees of Nielsen Media Research, which issues the daily ratings reports of U.S. TV stations. However, the company said, savings from the cuts will be used to develop new initiatives at Nielsen.

Makeover for Hollywood Reporter

The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled a new look for both its print publication and its website. The No. 2 entertainment trade publication, behind Variety, said that the change will go beyond the cosmetic and feature "a revised editorial approach, expanded range of coverage and analysis and new industry data exclusive to THR parent, The Nielsen Company." Initial online reaction to the remake was by and large negative. L.A. Weekly columnist Nikki Finke on her Dateline Hollywood Daily blog quoted a Hollywood Reporter insider as saying, "I think the money could have been far better spent keeping bodies in the building that are now sorely, desperately needed." Over the past year, the trade publication has seen the defection of several prominent staff members, including editor Cynthia Littleton, who moved to Variety. Finke reported that nine newsroom employees were laid off just two weeks ago.
