Okay, that was probably a little cruel. Especially given how much I love the Mamas and the Papas.

Avery Schreiber, the rotund, mustachioed comic best remembered for his routine with partner Jack Burns in which he played a forbearing taxi rider to Burns' narrow-minded driver, died Monday in Los Angeles at age 66. In 1973 he co-starred with Burns, whom he met at Chicago's Second City, in the ABC summer variety series, The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour. He also appeared in a long-running series of commercials for Doritos. Schreiber had recently been in declining health, suffering from a the hip condition avascular necrosis. In a recent letter to a friend, he wrote: "Asked when it hurts, I replied, 'Only when I sit, stand, lie still or bend.' ... I am amazed that I am in such good humor."

Sad. I heard the trades were working on a lot of Moore stuff for tomorrow's issues and now that Berle has died Moore is going to get lesser coverage. While it makes sense as Berle helped establish the medium of television, it's still too bad the deaths couldn't have happened just a day apart. Leave it to Berle to steal somebody else's material.

Yet another. Sad. This guy was truly one of the great directors. But if you make it to 95, I guess you've beaten the odds. Here's a short blurb from Variety:

"Viennese-born Billy Wilder, one of Hollywood's greatest writer-directors, died Wednesday night of pneumonia at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 95."

101 and a fairly peaceful death is a pretty fortunate way to go.

A much nicer death that she deserves. Imagine if she got her way and England made a deal with Hitler.
