"Online Entertainment" may be a bit broad in covering all the different types of things happening on the internet. This area is dedicated to Animation. There's a few sites out there that do good work. Of course, Shockwave.com leads the field. Spumco has always been there and icebox.com is really coming up fast. I think they might make it. Any thoughts?

Just saw The Oblongs on Warner Bros. Online. Ugh... I don't see that show making it on television. Same crappy character design, same crappy animation voices - Is there some sort of King of the Hill talent pool they just recycle over and over.

It's Saturday morning - there are cartoons on about 20 channels - and I'm sure they're all fine and probably a few that really kick ass - but I'm not watching them. Why the fuck would I watch animation on the internet when I could watch all I want on television and don't?

But compared to television animation - the flash cartoons on the net are so cheap. All these companies need is one to hit offline and they'll pay for everything else 10 times over. The problem is start up costs. If they would just not offer such huge salaries to start, they could stay in business longer and develop their properties properly.

No one is really staying in business long enough to develop anything. Den went out business about a year after getting VC. Who knows how much cash icebox has on hand. There are even rumors that Amazon is having cash problems - and they've got a real business!

It's a difficult thing to figure out. Now that everyone needs to prove that they can make money, it's proven to be not so easy. Everyone has great business plans and can foresee the future, but no can execute those business plans and no one seems to be able to make the future a reality. Everyone's a novice in this business.

With all the animation sites that are out there, it's starting to look like Springfield after everyone found out the secret ingredient of a "Flaming Mo". Soon everyone in town offered them, and it wasn't that exciting anymore. Just beer was fine again for Homer and Mo.

Many of these straight Flash animation websites are starting to get a lot of flack from the creative community and it's possible there will be a backlash against many of these sites - simply because of the attitude of "we're chaning the world, man, you'd better stick with us and try to keep up." A little humility would help these people.

I like animation. Hard Drinkin' Lincoln is my favorite show of all time.

There is an enormous backlash against online animation right now. It's amazing how film and TV producers have turned against anyone doing Flash. It's almost a revenge thing.

Flash Forward is next week in San Francisco. Online animation has really taken a hit lately. It will be around, but storytelling as well better artistry is going to need to take over this medium. It's not going to be as exciting an event as last year, especially with all the lay offs. The only reason I'm mentioning this... I'm going...
