Weinsteins Pursuing Diverse Slate in Effort to Build
TWC Into 'Giant Media Company' (by Eugene Hernandez,
March 31, 2005)

The Weinstein Company (as it is currently named), headed by
brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, has a slate of some 13
projects on tap for its first year, Harvey Weinstein explained
Tuesday during a conference call with journalists. He
emphasized that he and his brother will maintain relationships
that they have with a number of filmmakers, including Quentin
Tarantino ("Kill Bill," "Pulp Fiction"), Robert Rodriguez
("Sin City," "Spy Kids"), Kevin Smith ("Clerks," "Dogma"), and
Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient," "The Talented Mr.
Ripley"). A slate of new projects and some acquisitions made
while the brothers were still at Miramax are also heading to
what the Weinsteins promise will be a "fully integrated media
company" encompassing broadcasting, theatrical distribution,
and the Internet."

Harvey Weinstein emphasized, "This will finally give us the
entrepreneurial opportunities that we have long sought after."

According to accounts from both sides, the Weinsteins deal
at Miramax soured over the years as the brothers became
frustrated by their inability to make larger budget movies
and expand the company into new areas. Harvey Weinstein cited
"divergent beliefs" over the direction of Miramax, naming
specific instances in which he and his brother were not
allowed to pursue specific initiatives. Notable hurdles
included a Bravo/Independent Film Channel deal they hoped to
close, a pact to produce the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and
the purchase of Artisan Entertainment.

Miramax duo form new media posse
By Nic Hopkins

HARVEY and Bob Weinstein, the Hollywood impresarios behind Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, are close to raising as much as $1 billion (£530 million) to hatch a new media group that will be advised by the actors Robert Redford and Paul Newman.

The Weinstein brothers, whose exit from The Walt Disney Company was sealed this week, are seeking to raise between $350 million and $500 million from outside investors and as much as $500 million more in debt to finance the new company.

Among their long-term plans are the launch of a movie cable channel and the production of Broadway shows adapted from some of the films they produced as founders and co-chairmen of Disney’s Miramax film unit.

The Weinsteins, who will leave Disney formally when their contract expires in September, are expected to inject some of the estimated $130 million they will receive from their settlement with the company.

They have hired Goldman Sachs to help to raise the rest of the money and formed an advisory board that includes media investment banker Steven Rattner, Paul Tudor Jones, the billionaire hedge fund manager, and James Dolan, the chief executive of Cablevision, the US cable operator.

Paul Newman and Robert Redford, who starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, are acting as advisers along with Dirk Ziff, the billionaire media heir. Hollywood directors including Quentin Tarantino, Anthony Minghella and Kevin Smith are already making films for the start-up venture.

The Weinsteins plan to release between 15 and 20 films a year, some of which will be coproduced with Disney. But Harvey Weinstein said that the new company would be “a fully integrated media company” with reach into publishing and the internet.

Miramax Writers, Directors To Follow Weinsteins

Writers and directors who were responsible for some of Miramax's biggest hits plan to remain loyal to Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein as they leave the Disney Co. to form a new production/distribution company, The Weinstein Co., the Gannett News Service reported Thursday. The wire service quoted Harvey Weinstein as saying that his company will maintain "relationships of what we believe are some of the most significant and the most profitable filmmakers in the world" -- among them, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and Anthony Minghella. Rodriguez, whose Sin City debuted at No. 1 last weekend, commented, "If they're moving somewhere, you gotta go with them, or what, you're going to start making regular movies? They've still got the same taste. And they've got more to prove now, so they may do even better material."

When Less Is More in Filmmaking

By keeping his film budgets relatively low, director Robert Rodriguez indicated with a touch of irony today (Wednesday), he has been allowed greater freedom than directors who work with bloated budgets. Appearing at a news conference at the Cannes Film Festival where his latest film, Sin City, is competing for the Palme d'Or, Rodriguez commented that a low budget also "makes you more creative." Moreover, he told reporters, it also has allowed him to get his film projects approved quickly. Sin City was approved within minutes by former Miramax chiefs Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein, he said. (Made for $45 million, it has taken in $73 million domestically.) Making his films in Austin, TX (he is wearing a cowboy hat at Cannes), he also indicated, has allowed him to remain "under the radar" and keep studio executives at arms' length. He added that the liberty that he had been granted by the Weinsteins had been "extraordinary" and expressed no concern about their departure from Disney to form a separate company. "Disney was their bank," Rodriguez said. "Now, they're going to get another bank." He suggested that he plans to make his next film for the Weinsteins. "I'm going to follow them wherever they go," he said.

Weinsteins Say They'll "Hit the Ground Running"

Outgoing Miramax chiefs Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein announced Wednesday that they plan to release a kind of duet horror film next spring in which one hour will be written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and the other, by Robert Rodriguez. The two films, they said, will be packaged under the title Grind House. The brothers also announced that they will begin releasing a slate of 13 films in theaters beginning next October, one month after finally severing their relationship with Disney. They include sequels to Scary Movie and Sin City. "We have said all along that we would hit the ground running and we are confident that this slate will represent and deliver the kind of movies that audiences will love," the Weinsteins said in a statement.

Weinsteins Nab Basner to Head International Division
at Miramax and TWC (by Eugene Hernandez, June 9, 2005)

In a move that has had insiders here in New York buzzing all
week, Bob and Harvey Weinstein have hired Glen Basner to run
their international division, overseeing worldwide sales,
marketing, and distribution for The Weinstein Company. Basner
is starting at TWC immediately, leaving his post as executive
vice president of international sales and distribution at
Focus Features. Basner will handle similar duties at Miramax,
assuming full-time responsibilities at TWC on October 1st
when the Weinsteins leave Disney.

In a statement, Bob and Harvey Weinstein called the move a
"huge coup" for their new company. "As the Weinstein Company
begins to focus on the international arena, I can't think of
a more qualified person to spearhead all of our international
activities than Glen," said the Weinsteins in the statement.
"Glen's extensive knowledge of foreign sales and international
distribution is exactly the fit we are looking for at our new
company."

Weinsteins Snubbed at Sun Valley

Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein were not invited to attend the annual Allen & Co. conference in Sun Valley, the New York Post reported today (Thursday). The newspaper said that the Miramax founders, who recently formed a separate independent company called The Weinstein Company, were snubbed because they had failed to bring any investment banking business to Allen. The Post said that Harvey Weinstein, who was on a business trip to London, has been trying to wrangle an invitation by calling on colleagues in the industry to use their influence with Allen. On the other hand, the newspaper said, Michael Ovitz has made his first appearance in five years at the Allen shindig. However, it claimed, guests "slinked away" when official photographers attempted to snap their picture with Ovitz.

Gilliam's Rage at Weinstein Takeover

Twelve Monkeys director Terry Gilliam is furious with movie moguls Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein for scrapping his ideas and undermining his authority during filming of his new Matt Damon movie The Brothers Grimm. The powerful pair first ditched Gilliam's plans to cast Samantha Morton in the lead role in favor of lesser known actress Lena Headey, and then further enraged the former Monty Python star by sacking his cinematographer Nicola Pecorini for working too slowly. Tensions escalated to the extent that Gilliam refused to shoot for two weeks as he was so staggered by what he viewed as the Weinsteins' constant interference. He fumes, "I'm used to riding roughshod over executives, but the Weinsteins rode roughshod over me." But Bob Weinstein insists, "Any film involves the making of 10,000 decisions. If you only concentrate on the few we had issues with, you ignore the 9,997 we left to totally to Terry."

New Era Begins As Weinsteins Officially Launch New Company by Eugene Hernandez (October 2, 2005)

It's official. Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein begin working full-time at their new company Monday after having their final day at Miramax Films, the company they created in 1979. Miramax became the leading specialty division through the 90s, evolving into a major production and distribution arm of Walt Disney Studios over the last few years. A settlement announced back in March kept the Miramax name at Disney along with the Miramax and Dimension libraries, while the Weinsteins have the Dimension label at their new company, along with key projects and relationships. Friday, September 30th marked the Weinsteins last day at Miramax, coinciding with the official departure of Walt Disney Company CEO Michael Eisner the same day. Robert Iger has replaced him, while over the summer Daniel Battsek was named the new head of a smaller Miramax Films.

Weinstein's raise coin for company; Brothers receive $490 mil from investors

Bob and Harvey Weinstein's nascent media company, the Weinstein Co., said Monday that it has raised $490 million in private equity from a group of investors that includes Tarak Ben Ammar's Quinta Communications, TF1, Goldman Sachs, financier Vivi Nevo and hedge funds Perry Capital and GLG Partners, among others. Tally exceeds TWC's estimates from earlier this month when an SEC filing revealed the bros were counting on as much as $420 million. People close to the company say that TWC will now go about adding to the mix up to $500 million in additional debt financing. TWC further named its board of representatives Monday, which will include Ben Ammar, Ziff Bros.' chairman Dirk Ziff, amfAR founding chairman Mathilde Krim, Goldman advisory director Andrew Metcalfe and Spielman, Koenigsberg & Parker partner Richard Koenigsberg. Weinsteins will serve as co-chairmen of the company. "This is an extremely exciting day for us," said the Weinsteins in a joint statement. "We are thrilled with the important relationships we have formed with our investors over the past few months. We couldn't be happier with the members of the board whom we will be working closely with on an ongoing basis, building and operating (the company). We have assembled an incredibly talented and dedicated team of executives, and have the utmost confidence in all of them." TWC, which incorporates the Dimension Films genre label, will theatrically handle its domestic marketing and distribution. Company's first film release will be "Derailed," starring Jennifer Aniston and Clive Owen, which will roll out Nov. 11. Further pics include "The Libertine," "Transamerica" and "Mrs. Henderson Presents." A number of output deals are also said to have been inked in the U.K., Italy, France and other territories. TWC has yet to unveil its homevid strategies. Company is said to be angling to takeover fledgling music network Fuse to shore up a cable presence.

Sound familiar?

Whither Goeth Eisner?

Although his precise plans have yet to be formulated, Michael Eisner has told friends that he plans to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to buy or create a company that will create movie, TV and Broadway productions, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Monday). As the former Disney chief develops his plans, he has talked to Disney production chief Nina Jacobson and former head of strategic planning Peter Murphy about joining him, the newspaper said, citing Eisner acquaintances who asked not to be named. However Jacobson said that in her talks with Eisner, "No way did he approach me about working at his company. ... We talked about maybe someday working together again in the distant future. But there was not a specific intention." Murphy told the Times that it was premature for him to comment.

Weinsteins Unveil New DVD Venture; Wellspring Included in Plans
by Eugene Hernandez (December 6, 2005)

Fleshing out another key element, The Weinstein Company announced Monday that it would launch a new venture to distribute its films on home video and DVD, rather than partner with an existing Hollywood studio on the potentially lucrative ancillary market. The deal with Genius Products Inc. includes theatrical and DVD distributor Wellspring Media and its more than 700 title library, acquired earlier this year by Genius as part of its deal for American Vantage Media Corporation. In a conversation with indieWIRE Tuesday, the head of the new venture spoke with indieWIRE about the impact of this announcement on Wellspring.
